The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office has been notified that some residents received a notice in the mail from the Halifax County Public Judgement Records demanding unpaid taxes to be paid.
This notice is fake and a scam, Captain Scott Hall said.
The sheriff’s office is currently unaware of anyone who has been taken by the scam.
The notice has the appearance of being official. “If you have received a notice, you are requested to call a 1-800 number before a certain date to avoid enforcement actions such as garnished wages or seizure of property,” Hall said.
The tax office and the clerk of court office, which have also confirmed this as a scam, have local numbers to contact by phone.
“Please do not call or send money to anyone claiming to be part of the Halifax County Public Judgement Records Office,” Hall said.
