The Roanoke Rapids Graded School District Board of Trustees got its first look Tuesday night at the new Manning Elementary School on Park Avenue.

The 91,000 square-feet, two-story facility will be equipped for 700 students with room for expanding to 800.

“Security will be greatly improved as well. The new school will have one main entrance with a security vestibule,” architect Ed Gordon of Smith Sinnett told the board. “Additionally, we’re using lots of natural lighting to improve energy efficiency. We’re doing all we can to make this school as safe and energy efficient as possible.”

The $19.2 million dollar facility will also include a full-size multi-purpose room with connecting cafeteria similar to what is in place at Belmont Elementary.

“For the neighborhood, we’re doing a drop-off cue onsite so parents will no longer have to park on the street. This will improve the traffic flow and prevent children from having to cross over any busy intersections,” Gordon added.

The plans will now have to be approved by both the state Department of Public Instruction and the state Department of Insurance.

“We’re in a unique situation in that we’re going to be building this facility with Manning in full operation,” said Robbie Clements, director of facilities and operations for the school system. “This will mean the closure of Barrett Street beside the school and other traffic changes. We have no doubt our parents will work with us as we begin the transition. Student safety is our top priority.”

The bidding process will begin in March with the new school opening August of 2018.
