A Halifax County probation officer faces charges related to an attempted sex offense with a probationer, according to the state Bureau of Investigation.

In a statement, the SBI said Maud Edwin Elliott Ingram, 49, of Henrico, faces a charge of attempted second-degree rape; a charge of felony obstruction of justice and one felony count of failing to make reports and discharge other duties.

He was arrested Thursday and released on $50,000 secured bond. He awaits a September 23 court date in Halifax.

The SBI investigation was launched following a request made by the Roanoke Rapids Police Department, which received information alleging Ingram had inappropriate relationships with one of his probationers.

Roanoke Rapids Police Chief Chuck Hasty declined comment, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.

As of this report, the status of Ingram's job with the state Division of Public Safety has not changed, division spokesman Keith Acree said.

No supporting documents had been filed at the Halifax County Clerk of Courts Office as of this report.

Ingram was fingerprinted and photographed at the Roanoke Rapids Police Department before being released.
