Halifax County based Halifax Freedom's 2020 American Legion Fastpitch softball season cancelled before it could even start up.
The following message was sent out Monday night from State softball commissioner Mike Hasson.

North Carolina American Legion Lady Fastpitch Softball Teams and American Legion Post!

The North Carolinas American Legion Lady Fastpitch Program was established to put the Player first and Softball back into our communities. As we remain true to that Foundation in considering the safety of our youth and everyone involved, Today the North Carolina American Legion Department Executive Committee met and voted unanimously that ALL North Carolina American Legion youth programs be cancelled for the spring and summer of 2020. This includes Softball, Baseball and other American Legion youth programs. Many other American Legion programs across the country have also been cancelled at least through the summer. As disappointing as this decision is, I’m sure that it was a very difficult decision to make given the history of American Legion Baseball and now Fastpitch Softball. The growth that NC American Legion Lady Fastpitch (NC ALLF) Softball has experienced since it started just four years ago has been incredible. This growth is attributed to the efforts of the Teams, Fans, Communities and being sanction by The American Legion Department of North Carolina! As we go forward I ask everyone to continue supporting NC American Legion Lady Fastpitch Softball and NC American Legion in making it the Historical Fastpitch Softball Program that it has become across the Country, as more States commit to sanctioning their own American Legion Lady Fastpitch Program. We will continue to keep you informed and involved with the program going forward. With your continued commitment and support we plan on NC ALLF coming back stronger than ever in 2021! Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone as we continue to deal with the COVID-19 Pandemic and all those on the frontlines and that are working to combat this pandemic.
Halifax Freedom's team organizer Randy Wrenn stated, " I am saddened to see the season called so early with most of the girls already losing their Highschool season". Wrenn added, "This just gives us more time to work things out and try building the league more in our Eastern NC counties."
