Wadis V. Hedgepeth, 96, of Roanoke Rapids, NC passed away peacefully on Monday, February 11, 2019, in his home surrounded by loving family.

He was one of four children born to Ecca and Annie Bolton Hedgepeth.

Wadis served in the US Army during World War II as an instructor with the Tank Destroyers. He was a grocer and butcher for over thirty years.

Wadis earned his GED from Chowan College and retired as a deputy Tax Collector for Halifax County with over thirty years of service. He was a member of East 10th Street Church of Christ. The family appreciates the devotion of his faithful caregivers who helped in his declining health: Barbara Hewlin, Ella Alston, Bea Alston, Gail Endicott, Sheryl Dickens, Brandi Dickens, Nettie Lou Parks, and Lou Ann Warren.

Wadis was predeceased by his parents, one brother, two sisters, and his beloved wife Marian of 73 years.

He is survived by his son, Mike and wife, Beverly, of Roanoke Rapids, NC. He is also survived by one granddaughter, Sally Lou Newman (Dale) of Boydton, Virginia; a step-granddaughter, Crystal Morris (Brandon) of Jacksonville, NC; and a step-grandson Josh Clary (Ashley) of Wake Forest, NC. He is also survived by two great-granddaughters, Raney and Dylan Newman and three step-great-grandchildren, Ethan Morris, and Mackenzie and Reagan Clary.

A graveside service will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday, February 14 with Military Honors at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, NC with Rev. Randy Martin officiating. The family will receive at 10:00 a.m. at Wrenn, Clarke & Hagan Funeral Home prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his memory to East 10th St. Church of Christ, 1207 East Tenth Street, Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870.
