David Judson “Mad Dog” Newsom, age 75, passed away on October 28, 2024.
He was born to the late M.C. and Emily Newsom.
He was also preceded in death by his brother Mac Newsom.
David graduated from Roanoke Rapids High School in 1967 and later earned a degree in Engineering from North Carolina State University. He was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity.

After working one year with Shell Oil Company in Atlanta, he came home and joined the family business.
After the retirement of his father, he became President of Newsom Oil Company where he worked for 42 years.
He cherished his employees and the work they did in order to make the company a success. They were his family.
In 1974, he married the love of his life, Sylvia.
He received honors for work as a community volunteer for many organizations which included the Roanoke Rapids Lion Club, Roanoke Rapids Jaycees, and Roanoke Valley Chamber of Commerce.
He was a lifetime member of First United Methodist Church where he served on the Board of Trustees.
David enjoyed riding his Harley-Davidson, lifting weights, playing his guitar, dancing, and had a deep passion for his dogs and loved the N.C. State Wolfpack.
One of his joys was skiing at Lake Gaston, especially barefooting behind Charlie’s 1969 Chris Craft. He was especially proud to have one of the first fireworks shows on the lake.
He is survived by his wife Sylvia Bell Newsom, niece Kate Newsom of Brooklyn, N.Y., sister-in-law Lindsay Newsom of Raleigh, brother-in-law William Bell of Roanoke Rapids, cousins Kimberly Shearin Ferguson (Michael) of Roanoke Rapids and Bill Teele (Joni) of Suffolk, Virginia.
A reception will be held on Thursday, October 31, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Hockaday Funeral Home located at 507 U.S. Highway 158 in Roanoke Rapids.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 1, at Cedarwood Cemetery. Hockaday Funeral Home is handling all arrangements.
