Dennis Wayne Matthews Sr. 69 of Roanoke Rapids, NC passed away peacefully at Duke-Raleigh Hospital on Saturday March 30, 2024.  

Dennis was born on January 6, 1955, in Halifax County.  He was preceded in death by his parents Charlie and Myrtie Matthews.

He is survived by his daughter Christy (Lee) Cahoon, his son Dennis Wayne Mattews Jr., brothers Ronnie Matthews, Randy (Alice) Matthews, Scott Matthews (Cindy), sister Denice Griffin, his grandchildren James (Katie), DJ, Ryan, Josh, Trey, Madison, Chloe, Lexi, Collin, Gary, Victoria, Stephanie, great grandchildren Mady, Leo, Logan, Lily and Abel, his special friend Stella Ricks and his K-9 companion Penny.

Dennis was a member of Roanoke Baptist Church and the Stray Cats Hot Rod Association.

He had a brilliant, mechanical mind and he was a friend to everyone. 

He was a conversationalist, enjoyed visiting with folks, and was always easy to have a visit with. He loved his family and those around him.

Visitation will be Thursday April 4, 2024, 7:00pm to 9:00pm at Hockaday Funeral Home & Cremations, service will be on Friday April 5, 2024, at 2:00pm in the Chapel at Hockaday Funeral & Cremations.

Pastor Rick Rogers will be conducting the service.  

Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.
