Herman Leroy Wilder, Sr. 83, of Roanoke Rapids passed away Thursday, November 18, 2021, at home surrounded by his family.

Leroy was born September 4, 1938, in Halifax County to the late Elwood Shelton Wilder and Annie Bell Clark Wilder. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Laura Wilder; and his brother, Shelton Wilder.

Leroy was a longtime active member of Harvest Temple Pentecostal Holiness Church where he also served as a deacon and helped with the Men’s and Senior Ministries. Leroy loved the Lord, his church and extended church families, and fishing. He was always encouraging and supportive of his family and always willing to help anyone in need. 

Leroy served in the Army National Guard and retired in 2000 from Champion International after 41 years.

Leroy is survived by his children, Herman Leroy “Lee” Wilder, Jr. and his wife Casey of Manila, AR, Charles Edward “Eddie” Bedwell and his wife Barbara of Raleigh, NC, Eddie Gene Carter and his wife Evelyn of Falcon, NC, and Sherrie Gupton and her husband Ricky of Roanoke Rapids; his grandchildren, Brad Wilder, Ashley Murphy and her husband Dustin, Leslie Wilder, John Michael Gupton, Samantha Griffin and her husband Brett, Daniel Taff and Charlye Keener; his great-grandchildren, Davis Murphy and Ashlynn Murphy, Dakota Taff, Jackson Keener and Braxton Wood; his special friend, Irma Harlow and his special companion, Little Bit; his brother, Joseph “Joe” Wilder and his wife Elaine of Rolesville, NC; his sisters, Nancy Williams of Roanoke Rapids and Ella Faye Gibbs and her husband Charles of Raleigh.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday, November 22, 2021, at Harvest Temple Pentecostal Holiness Church. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery. The family will receive Sunday, November 21, 2021, from 4:00 – 6:00 P.M. at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service and other times at Leroy’s home.
