Ralph Wade Smith, 80, of Roanoke Rapids passed away Thursday, September 17, 2020 at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.

Wade was born June 28, 1940 in Halifax County to the late John L. Smith and Ila Keeter Smith. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Lawrence Smith and Gene Smith; his sister-in-law Josephine Smith; brother-in-law, David Pittard.

Wade was a longtime member of Hawkins Chapel United Methodist Church where he served in numerous positions. Wade loved his family and was a proud father and granddaddy. He proudly served four years in the United States Air Force, from 1963 – 1967. Wade began his career in the grocery business, where he worked with A & P Tea Company and Shearin’s Red and White for 38 years.  Wade also was in the Rheasville Volunteer Fire Department for over 45 years where he also served in numerous positions.

Wade is survived by his wife of 56 years Ann Smith; his children, Robert Smith and his wife Katherine and Richard Smith and his wife Scarlet; his grandchildren, Collin Smith, Candice Smith and Garrett Smith; his brother, Alfred Smith and his wife Dot; his sister, Leila Pittard; his sister-in-law, Arlene Smith all of Roanoke Rapids and numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 P.M. Sunday, September 20, 2020 at Hawkins Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery with Rev. Stan Lewis officiating.

The family would like memorial contributions made to Hawkins Chapel United Methodist Church, Repair Fund, 6955 Hwy 48, Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870 or Rheasville Volunteer Fire Department, 3456 NC 48, Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870.
