Howerton Chester “Praying Man” Finch, 85, died Friday, December 6, 2019 at his Weldon home.

Mr. Finch was born in Halifax County on April 9, 1934, a son of Grover and Lilly May Kittrell Finch.  

He was a retired painting contractor.  

Mr. Finch liked to tinker with machinery, was an old time hunter and fisherman, and had the gift of gab.  He never met a stranger. 

He loved Jesus as his Lord and personal saviour and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ on Emry Street in Roanoke Rapids.

Surviving are his daughters, Angela Wright (Philip Bailey) and Priscilla Edwards (Dennis); son, Gene Finch, all of Roanoke Rapids; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.   

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Snowdean E. Finch; sons, Timothy and Howerton, Finch Jr.; daughter-in-law, Janet Finch; and 3 grandchildren.

Friends may visit with the family from 6 – 8 pm Tuesday, Dec. 10, at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation.

The funeral service will be held at 2 pm Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Ricky Jordan presiding.  Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Weldon.
