Amerlius Ferguson Miles, was born on November 1, 1940, at the home of her parents Moses and Virginia Ferguson in Northampton County. She was raised in Occoneechee Neck along with 9 other siblings. She spent her childhood helping take care of her younger siblings and working around the farm. Many years of wonderful memories were made there. 

During her high school years she drove the school bus so that she could buy material to make her own clothes. She graduated from Jackson High School in 1959. 

On July 3, 1959, she married the love of her life, Raymond Turner Miles Sr. Together they had three beautiful children, Stephanie Miles Taylor, Deborah Miles Marshall, and Raymond Turner Miles Jr. 

Amerlius had a passion for education and a deep love for every student she taught. She was one of those teachers that made a true connection and impact with everyone who came in contact with her. She dedicated many years as a teacher’s aide and retired from the Roanoke Rapids Graded School District. Even after retirement she was called to substitute. She had the privilege of teaching her own grandchildren and great grandchildren. 

Her passion for the love of children and the Lord led her to serving in various children’s ministries in the community. She served in Awana, Pioneers Club and VBS. She was always a willing servant for the Lord and was a member of Valley Community Church. 

Amerlius Miles passed on June 10th, 2022 in the home where she raised her children, at 81 years of age, surrounded by her family and loved ones. 

She is preceded in death by her parents, Moses and Virginia Ferguson and her eldest daughter, Stephanie Miles Taylor. Her siblings, Carlton Ferguson, Diane Ferguson, and Lenwood Ferguson. 

Amerlius is survived by her husband of 62 years, Raymond Turner Miles Sr, her siblings, Geraldine Hannah, Allen Ray Ferguson, Glen Ferguson, Margaret Elaine Joyner Ferguson, Meredith Arlene Ferguson Mitchell, and Judy Ferguson Mitchell. Her children, Deborah Miles Marshall (David) and Raymond Turner Miles Jr. Her grandchildren, Brandon Whitley, Jarrett Taylor, Hayden, Breanne, and Braden Marshall, Justin, and Tanner Miles. Her great grandchildren, Talon Lassiter, Paislee Davis, and Sawyer Whitley. 

A Celebration of Life will be held at Valley Community Church, on Tuesday, June 14, 2022 at 6:00 pm. 

She will be remembered because of the tremendous impact she had on her family and those in our community who were blessed to know her. Anyone who knew her, loved her. She had a love for anyone who crossed her path. She always had a beautiful smile and was willing to help those in need.
