Nellie Stewart Taylor Lyles, 97, of Franklin, VA, passed away on January 8, 2020.

She was the daughter of the late Harvey Wagner and Katie Bell Butts Taylor in Roanoke Rapids, NC. 

She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Russell H. Lyles, Sr. and also by her son Russell H. Lyles, II. 

Nellie Stewart was born and raised in Roanoke Rapids and graduated from Roanoke Rapids High School’s Class of 1941. After marrying Russell in 1946, she moved to New Jersey where her husband was employed as an engineer with the Pennsylvania Railroad. 

Their home for twenty-nine years was located in Linden where they raised their son Russell. The family was very active in the Linden Methodist Church. Nellie Stewart was employed nine years as a retail order processor with the J.B. Williams Company. 

After Nellie and her husband Russell retired, they returned to Roanoke Rapids where they lived for thirty-four years. 

They were members of the Rosemary Methodist Church. She was a member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club and the Down to Earth Flower Club. She also volunteered her services with the Good Samaritan food and clothes bank and with the school district as a reading tutor. 

Nellie Stewart and Russell moved from Roanoke Rapids to The Village at Woods Edge, a retirement Community in Franklin, VA, where they happily spent the rest of their lives.

Nellie Stewart is survived by her granddaughter, Meredyth, husband Chris Corey and her great-grandson Aidan; granddaughter, Elizabeth and her husband, Woody Shores, and her great granddaughter, Sophia and great grandson, Brandon. 

Prior to the funeral service conducted by Rev. Sue Owens and Steve McElroy on Monday, January 13, 2020 at 1pm, the family will receive friends in the Rosemary Methodist Church’s sanctuary with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow at the Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, NC.
