A Washington, D.C., man who crashed a stolen U-Haul following a chase for speeding was later arrested by Rocky Mount authorities after stealing a beer from a store near where he fled the scene, according to the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office.
Captain Scott Hall said Edward William Elliott, 29, was clocked speeding on Interstate 95 by Lieutenant M. Brown shortly before 1:45 Monday morning.
Brown initiated a stop at the 171 mile marker but Elliott continued in the southbound lane until he crashed near the weigh station at the Nash County line.

Elliott fled following the crash and warrants were issued for his arrest.
He was later arrested by Rocky Mount police after stealing a beer at a store near the interstate.
Rocky Mount officers turned Elliott over to Brown, who served him warrants for flee to elude arrest, speeding, reckless driving to endanger, fail to stop at a stop sign, and fail to heed blue lights and siren. He also faces charges of possession of a stolen motor vehicle and resisting a public officer.
Rocky Mount police charged him with misdemeanor larceny and resisting a public officer.
Elliott received a $25,000 secured bond and, as of this report, remains in the Halifax County Detention Center awaiting a January 25 district court date.
The U-Haul was stolen from Fairfax County, Virginia.
