A Roanoke Rapids man and woman have been charged as accessories in a shooting on Colonial Drive Friday which resulted in the death of one and the serious injury of another victim.

Chief Deputy Scott Hall of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said this morning the accessory after the fact charges against Lonnie Wood, 55, and Sarah Spivey, 30, reflected they helped Sammy Massey following the shooting of Jose Gayton, who later died, and Riley Johnson, who remains in stable but critical condition. Hall declined elaboration.

Hall said Wood and Spivey are thought to be acquainted with Massey, who has been charged with murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, and attempted murder.

They received $25,000 bonds and April 22 court dates.

Massey was captured Monday morning at Baymont Inn where he had been holed up since the shootings.

The sheriff’s office said Friday deputies responded to the 300 block of Colonial Drive to reports of two people who were shot in the chest.

Deputies arrived on scene and learned that the victims had left the area in a vehicle which was later discovered at Zoo Road and Colonial Drive.

Massey fled the scene driving a Toyota Camry which was found over the weekend and had been abandoned in an alley in Roanoke Rapids.
