A Raleigh man was extradited to Halifax County Wednesday to face charges related to a chase which ended in a crash in Virginia.

Chief Deputy Scott Hall said this afternoon it was initially believed that Halifax County Sheriff’s Office Lieutenant E. Carroll was chasing a woman. After the person was arrested, it was determined that Nathan Lassiter Keith, 21, was a man.

The events leading to the crash in Virginia occurred Monday around 2:30 p.m. after Carroll attempted to stop a vehicle on Interstate 95 near the 172 mile marker for reckless driving, speeding, a seatbelt violation, and failure to operate headlights in the rain.

Keith reportedly failed to stop and Carroll gave chase in and around Roanoke and then back on I-95, Hall said in a statement.

Keith fled into Virginia and later crashed into a guardrail while attempting to cross the interstate.

Keith fled from the vehicle and was apprehended a short distance away by Carroll and Deputy M. Bishop.

Keith was turned over to Virginia State Police for impaired driving.

On Wednesday Carroll and Deputy Jake Pignanello of the criminal interdiction and traffic team brought Keith back to Halifax County to face charges of felony elude arrest with a motor vehicle.

He was released on $5,000 bond with a January 20 court date.
