A 30-year-old Roanoke Rapids man is in custody without the opportunity for bond and will have a September 2 court appearance to answer to a charge of murder after a Tuesday evening shooting.

Cedric Richardson was arrested by Lieutenant L.B. Norton soon after police received a call a man, later identified as Michael Pilgrim Jr., was shot multiple times while outside in the Oakridge Drive and Green Garden Court area of Roanoke Rapids. The area is off Georgia Avenue. 

Roanoke Rapids police Chief Bobby Martin said in a statement that Norton encountered Richardson soon after the shooting call in the area of Mecham Drive and arrested him without trouble. Richardson and Pilgrim are acquainted.

Pilgrim was transported to Vidant North were he later died from the gunshot wounds. 

Martin said in the statement the police department continues to investigate and anyone with information is encouraged to call Captain Jamie Hardy at 252-533-2810 or Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.

Martin said earlier today Pilgrim was shot with a handgun in the upper torso multiple times. The shooting occurred shortly before 6 p.m.

The police chief also said this morning it is too early to discuss the motive in the case.
