A suspect is in custody in a shooting death in the area of Oakridge Drive and Green Garden Court off Georgia Avenue Tuesday evening.

The person in custody was not named in an initial statement the Roanoke Rapids Police Department sent out Tuesday night.

Chief Bobby Martin said a followup statement will be released later this morning along with the name of the victim, whose family had not been notified at the time of the first press release. He said the victim is a man in his early to mid-20s.

The victim was shot with a handgun in the upper torso multiple times. The shooting occurred outside shortly before 6 p.m.

The suspect was apprehended on Meacham Drive, which is about a block away from the original crime scene.

In the statement Martin said the victim was transported for medical care but later died from the wounds sustained.

Martin said this morning it is too early to discuss the motive in the case. “We are still trying to determine what this is in reference to.”
