A Juneteenth commemoration was held Saturday morning at Centennial Park in Roanoke Rapids.

A march from the Gaston bridge to the park led up to the event at the park, where speakers said they plan to make the commemoration an annual event.

Juneteenth is a commemoration of June 19, 1865 when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas. There they took control of the state to make sure all enslaved people were freed.

The troops came approximately two-and-a-half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.
