For five members of Girl Scout Troop 377, their Silver Award project was made of work, education and even a few hugs.

Monday, the scouts made a presentation of the project, the last step toward receiving the award, the second-highest commendation within the organization.

Their project centered around Place to Play, an after-school care service at Belmont Elementary School, said Rita Tromans, troop leader.

The girls — Jaden Lassiter, Topanga Ryder, Sheida McLaughlin, Cheyenne Hester and Hannah Taylor — decided after reviewing numerous possibilities to do a gardening and healthy living project for Place to Play.

In those eight weeks the scouts designed nutritional plans, nature exhibits and made a memorial garden to honor students and staff who have died.

“This took a lot of planning and included a lot of activities,” Tromans said at the Girl Scout Hut located on Hamilton Street. “The Silver Award is a 50-hour project. They well-exceeded 50 hours.”

Taylor said the most challenging part of the project was the planning while the most fun was interacting with the children of Place to Play.

“They gave us lots of hugs,” Sheida McLaughlin said.

While the hardest part for Lassiter was making sure the tops of hand-crafted terrariums stayed intact, the entire project was worthwhile. “I think it gave me responsibility.”
