Three Roanoke Rapids teens were charged Tuesday for reportedly stealing gasoline from a city school district box truck.

Lieutenant Charles Vaught of the Roanoke Rapids Police Department said it appeared the tank to the vehicle was punctured with a drill so the gasoline could be diverted for the teens' own use.

In today's police roundup, Chief Chuck Hasty said the vandalism was reported around 7:30 a.m.

Master Officer Mark Peck responded to Roanoke Rapids High School and learned sometime overnight the tank had been punctured.

Further investigation by Vaught led to Cody Lee Hardy and Jonathan Cameron Coley, both 17, and Dillon Tyler Irby, 18, being arrested and charged with damage to property and larceny of the gasoline.

Hardy and Coley received $500 bonds, while Irby, who was already out of jail on other charges, received a $40,000 bond.

They were given July 24 court dates.

Deputy Chief Andy Jackson, investigators Chris Babb and Frankie Griffin and school resource Officer Rex Stainback assisted.
