The Roanoke Rapids Police Department reported the following, according to Chief Bobby Martin:

Friday shortly before 8:45 p.m., Officer J. Wind responded to the area of Clinton Street on a wreck call.

Wind observed a minivan with damage to its front end and an SUV which was hit and pushed approximately 10 to 15 feet. 

Wind reportedly detected the odor of alcohol coming from the van driver as they spoke.

At the conclusion of roadside sobriety tests, the driver, Shawna Mullins, 40, of the Roanoke Rapids area, was placed under arrest for suspicion of driving while impaired. 

Mullins was carried before a magistrate. She was charged with DWI and released to a responsible party. She has a January 27 court date.

Saturday shortly after 2:45 a.m., Master Officer M. Hunsucker was on patrol in the area of Julian R. Allsbrook Highway and Premier Boulevard when he noticed the driver of a vehicle sitting at a green light and not moving.

Hunsucker noticed the driver was slumped over and the vehicle was still running.

Hunsucker went to the driver’s side window and knocked on it but the driver did not respond.

Officers continued to attempt to wake the driver and broke the window to get the driver to safety and protect the safety of others.

Officers conducted on-site sobriety tests and placed 35-year-old James Jeffries of the Roanoke Rapids area under arrest for suspicion of driving while impaired. 

He was carried before a magistrate where he was charged with DWI and released to a responsible party. He has a January 3 court date.

Sunday shortly after 10:45 p.m., Newsome responded to the Walmart parking lot about a couple arguing.

Newsome encountered the couple and noticed an abundance of empty alcoholic beverage containers on the floorboard.

The two people were warned about arguing and told to call someone to pick them up.

They headed to Walmart but Newsome received another call about the argument resuming.

Newsome and Hunsucker then observed the pair leave the parking lot in a vehicle, the car hitting the curb near the garden center and creating sparks. They turned onto Premier Boulevard.

The officers stopped the vehicle and identified the driver as Wilford Bobbitt, 50, of the Roanoke Rapids area.

Officers could reportedly smell alcohol on the driver and carried him before a magistrate where he was charged with DWI.

He received a $500 bond and January 13 court date.

 

Sunday shortly after 2 a.m., Hunsucker was patrolling the area of Highway 158 and Vine Street when he noticed the driver of a vehicle make a wide turn then an abrupt left turn onto Georgia Avenue.

Hunsucker followed the vehicle as the driver gained speed well over the posted limit.

The driver turned into a driveway and continued almost into the backyard of the home.

Cordell Jones, 30, of Roanoke Rapids, and a passenger, got out and walked away before yielding to the officer.

Jones was carried before a magistrate and charged with DWI. He was released to a responsible party and received a January 3 court date.
