Numerous reputed street-level cocaine dealers were arrested over the last week following a three-month investigation dubbed Southern Summer by the Halifax County Sheriff's Office.
Sheriff Wes Tripp said the campaign began on March 31 and ended around the last part of June.
The investigation and the subsequent arrests were the result of officer investigation and citizen complaints across the county, the sheriff said.
“During the investigation agents were able to make 28 active drug cases with 23 suspects and a total of 81 drug charges,” Tripp said in a statement. “Some of the suspects dealt with undercover agents more than once.”
The sheriff said agents went to most areas of the county and were successful during the investigation. During the undercover drug buys agents purchased cocaine, crack cocaine, and marijuana.
Tripp said despite the recent increase in heroin, cocaine remains prevalent in the area. “We're seeing cocaine, marijuana and heroin.”
That those arrested are street-level dealers, the sheriff said, may have thwarted efforts to expand their business. “They are street level, which has a tendency to lead to bigger things. We continue to seriously work drugs in Halifax County.”
More arrests are pending, the sheriff said.
