Instead of planning for his entrance into Northampton County High School, the family of Keyuon Garner will be planning his funeral today.

The 15-year-old was murdered Monday night at the intersection of Eleventh and Maple streets in an area of Weldon known as The Strip. Hours after Garner was murdered, 2-year-old Diana Anderson was killed in the 600 block of Cedar Street Tuesday morning.

“He's been with me since he was a day old,” his aunt, Trivette Clark, said this morning. “He's pretty much like my son.”

Garner mainly attended the Weldon City School system but was going to go to Northampton County High School, his aunt said. “He was a good kid. He had his mind set for college. He just made everyone smile. He was a very respectful little boy. He didn't disrespect anybody.”

Garner was on his way home with two others when they were ambushed by people coming out of nearby woods. “I'm guessing they were looking to shoot someone else and he got caught in the crossfire,” Clark said, adding she didn't think the shooter or shooters were targeting the two others Garner was with. They were shot, but treated and released.

“We are going to plan the services today,” his aunt said.

Clark said Garner leaves behind his mother and father, two younger sisters and a host of cousins on both sides of the family. “His little cousins looked up to him.”

As the family plans services for the teen, his cousin, Lakima Brickell, has set up a GoFundMe account to defray expenses.

Brickell said her cousin liked to play basketball and hang out with his friends.

Questions plague the family as to why. “We don't really know,” said Brickell. “We're really clueless. It was horrible. Every time we expect to wake up from a nightmare. We didn't expect our own child to leave us like this.”
