A grease fire off Highway 903 in the King's Crossroads community caused injuries to two occupants today.
Davie Volunteer Fire Department Chief David Padgett said a male occupant, whose name was not immediately available, sustained second- and third-degree burns on his legs after a female occupant, whose name was also not immediately known, pulled a pan of grease from the stove. She either dropped or threw it down after the grease burned her. She sustained first-degree burns to her arms.
Firefighters received the call shortly before 2:45 p.m. and learned that a pan of grease left on an oven burner caught fire.
It took firefighters approximately 5 minutes to contain the fire, which damaged the cabinets overhead, the stove itself and the counter. Padgett estimated damages to be between $3,000 to $3,500.
The female was taken to Halifax Regional Medical Center for treatment. The male was treated at the scene and then transported to HRMC. There was the possibility he was going to be taken elsewhere for treatment, Padgett said.
At least 10 firefighters from Davie and Rheasville responded to the fire, which was located at1484 Highway 903 outside Roanoke Rapids.
