A Conway man who allegedly used a sick child as an excuse for speeding was arrested on marijuana counts while his girlfriend was arrested for reportedly interfering in the matter.

Captain Chuck Hasty of the Northampton County Sheriff's Office said the matter occurred Friday after Deputy Kenny Melton stopped Justin Andrew Vaughan, 22, for speeding.

Vaughan allegedly told the deputy he was trying to get home to tend to his sick child. The deputy called for EMS to meet them at the residence where the child was located.

The deputy followed Vaughan to check on the child, who was not sick, and, upon arriving, noticed a smoking pipe in the front seat of Vaughan's vehicle.

Melton detained Vaughan and, following a search of the vehicle, reportedly found marijuana, smoking pipes and two BB guns inside.

Vaughan was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting arrest.

He was given a $2,000 bond and assigned a June 5 court date.

Meanwhile, Melton charged Vaughan's girlfriend, Brittany Flythe, 22, with resist, delay and obstruct for reportedly trying to interfere with the arrest.

She was given a $500 and the same court date as her boyfriend.

In another matter, Hasty reported that on Sunday Deputy William James responded to a trespasser call on Ms. Mag Road in Conway.

Once Deputy James arrived at the residence he spoke with the victim, who told him Kelsey Devon Patterson, 26, of Jackson would not leave the residence.

James told Patterson that he needed to leave the residence. He refused and was charged with trespassing. He was given a $500 secured bond and May 22 court date.
