Thieves for the past several weeks have stolen chrome rims and low-profile tires from three vehicles in Halifax County, leaving their owners to find them sitting on cinder blocks.

The latest theft was discovered around 5 a.m. today, according to Major Scott Hall of the Halifax County Sheriff's Office. It occurred in the Zoo Road and Highway 158 area of Roanoke Rapids, the victim going out to see the vehicle resting on blocks the thieves apparently supplied.

“These type of wheels often are very costly and the demand on the black market has increased,” Hall said in a statement. He said the value of rims and tires stolen thus far is at least a couple of thousand dollars.

The sheriff's office is investigating to determine whether the thefts are linked.

Hall said the best safeguard is to park vehicles in well-lighted areas.
