Two Halifax County Sheriff's Office deputies helped a man safely get out of his home during a house fire Wednesday morning.

Corporal Matt Brown and Deputy Brian Biggerstaff responded to the call with firefighters around 4 a.m. after the call was dispatched that a man was still inside the 191Carico Road residence.

The deputies, according to Sheriff Wes Tripp, observed smoke coming from the windows of the residence. Brown opened the door and spoke with the man as he was trying to douse the grease fire with water.

Biggerstaff got a fire extinguisher and Brown went inside and pulled the man out as smoke filled the kitchen and fire climbed up the wall to the ceiling.

The residence became engulfed once the deputies and the victim got outside. The victim was transported to Halifax Regional Medical Center where he was treated.

“It was a very good effort and pure act of heroism on both their parts,” the sheriff said this afternoon.
