The Northampton County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the theft and damage of campaign signs put out by sheriff's candidate Brenda Burnette.
Sheriff Jack Smith said in a news release two different incidents were reported to Deputy Chris Collier on February 14 by Burnette, one in the Vultare Community along Highway 46 while the other took place at the intersection of Highway 258 and Highway 35 in Woodland.
In Vultare, the sign was taken and found destroyed in a field by the candidate's husband, Tony. It was discovered about a quarter mile from where it had been erected.
In Woodland it appeared that the sign had been run over by a vehicle.
The Northampton County Sheriff's Office is actively investigating this crime, Smith said.
It is a misdemeanor to steal or damage the property of another person.
