A Roanoke Rapids man was charged Tuesday with having a stolen firearm as a convicted felon.

Halifax County Sheriff's Office Lieutenant Roy Rooks said in a statement released today that Deputy R.M. Brown charged and arrested Curtis Eugene Avent, 38, with larceny of a firearm. Possession of a stolen firearm and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.

Avent was staying at a local motel when he was arrested.

His arrest stems from a stolen firearm complaint earlier in the week. Avent allegedly stole the firearm from a friend he was residing with in the Roanoke Rapids area.

Avent was jailed on $25,000 bond and has a September 25 court date.
