The Halifax Resolves Chapter of the North Carolina Society of the Sons of the American Revolution today honored the efforts of Roanoke Rapids Police Department Detective Jeff Baggett.

The award, which came with a certificate and medal, honored Baggett for his achievements and dedication in maintaining law and order within the community.

Captain Andy Jackson said the police department was honored to get the call from society President Ken Wilson seeking someone deserving of the award. “I talked to Chief (Tommy) Hathaway and the first person to come to mind was Jeff Baggett.”

Baggett, Jackson said, is a resident of Roanoke Rapids and a graduate of Roanoke Rapids High School.

An Army veteran, Baggett is sergeant of the police department’s Criminal Investigation Division. “He is one of the most diligent workers to have ever served.  This is the man you want to show up at your home.”

Jackson said he and Baggett have worked 11 murders together and they have all resulted in arrests. “He is the backbone of the detective division. He puts the victims and citizens first.”

Wilson said Jackson and Hathaway immediately suggested Baggett.

“It’s a great honor,” Baggett said at a brief ceremony at city hall, in which some of his fellow detectives attended. “I can’t think of a better group of officers to work with.”

City Manager Joseph Scherer, who also attended the ceremony, said, “I think Jeff is an outstanding detective. His award is reflective of not only his efforts but the efforts of the entire department in addressing the public service needs of the community.”
