The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a man in the Saturday night beating of his former girlfriend and continues to investigate a shooting that occurred the same evening.

Lieutenant Scott Hall said the beating occurred around 9 p.m. when Michael Scott Hamilton, 31, allegedly beat his ex-girlfriend with a baseball bat.

The victim was listed in stable condition at a hospital trauma center and Hamilton was charged with attempted murder. He was jailed without the opportunity for bond.

He will appear in court this week and further charges are pending.

Meanwhile, Hall said in a press release, the sheriff’s office continues to investigate a shooting that occurred in the parking lot of the Community Marathon off Highway 158 near Zoo Road.

The victim was shot once and was a passenger in a vehicle.

The apparent motive in the case appears to be robbery. No suspect information is being released at this time, he said.

The victim was transferred to a hospital trauma center and is in critical condition.
