A traffic violation Thursday led to cocaine charges for an Enfield man when the arresting deputy noticed a powdery substance on his clothes.

Deputy Graham Page of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office noticed the traffic violation shortly before 10 p.m. on Highway 48 near Carolina Rest Home Road, Chief Deputy Wes Tripp said in a press release.

He noticed a strong odor of alcohol coming from the vehicle as well the white substance.

A field test swab indicted positive for possible cocaine and the residue was allegedly found scattered throughout the front passenger area of the vehicle.

Page seized two small brown envelopes of the same white substance. Tripp did not have an approximate weight.

Page charged Ernest Allen Davis, 50, with possession of cocaine. Trooper D.P. Efird of the state Highway Patrol charged him with DWI, driving left of center and driving after consuming.

He was placed on $1,500 secured bond and has a May 29 court date.
