There remains $11,725 in Recreation Partners program funds and those interested in applying have until April 15 to do so.

The funds are part of a $30,000 budget appropriation Halifax County Board of Commissioners allowed in January for summer recreation programs this year, according to information contained in Monday’s agenda packet.

Of the 11 applications, seven were approved for funding, said Ginny Orvedahl, who oversaw the committee.

Funded programs include two summer basketball programs, an encampment for the Civil Air Patrol squadron, a summer softball program, a walking trail, day camp and reading program.

Commissioner Vernon Bryant was disappointed in the participation. “I commend the committee,” he said at the board’s meeting Monday. “I’m disappointed in our county and citizens for not taking advantage of it.”

Board Chair James Pierce said he believed the program was a work in progress. He said the program was specifically designed for summer programs.

In another Monday the county recognized the retirement of Lieutenant Carol A. Kankosky from the sheriff’s office effective at the end of this month.

Bryant said he had the opportunity to work with Kankosky in his past role in community corrections and keeping track of registered sex offenders. “She was recognized in the state as one of the best. She ran a tight ship.”

Sheriff Jeff Frazier presented Kankosky her badge and weapon. “Thank you so much for your service and helping me,” he said.

Kankosky, who has worked with the county for 22 years, said, “It’s been an honor serving the county and my sheriff.”
