Some areas in the county are as heavily populated as those in incorporated areas, Chief Deputy Wes Tripp said.
That’s why the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office is urging caution when shooting outdoors, whether it is for hunting or practice.
Tripp said in a press release that in recent months the sheriff’s office has responded to several calls for service where roofs to homes have been damaged by falling bullets and others that have been shot into while occupied.
The most recent case, Tripp said this morning, involved a man inside his house who barely escaped injury when a bullet flew into his house. Investigation revealed there was no criminal intent.
In fact, of the calls the sheriff’s office received, the overwhelming majority has been from target practice and hunting.
“We as law abiding citizens, have the right to bear arms,” Tripp said in the press release. “The sheriff’s office strongly advises gun safety. Be mindful of children playing and other’s property. When discharging a weapon, make sure it’s in a safe direction. Remember, what’s shot up into the air, must come down, and wood lines are not your best barriers.”
Damage reported included shingles and roofs, Tripp said.
