A former Enfield town employee has thus far been charged with allegedly using the town’s credit card to charge $250 worth of gas for his own use.

Lieutenant J.D. Powell of the Enfield Police Department says these are the charges from December and investigators are still working on charges allegedly made in November and October, when it is believed the fraud began.

Powell and Detective R.L. White Thursday charged James Earl Bellamy, 52, of Rocky Mount, with seven counts of larceny by employee and seven counts of credit card fraud.

The discrepancies were discovered during a routine audit of fuel transactions within the town’s Public Works Department, Powell said in a press release.

The audit determined a town fuel card was used to make several unauthorized purchases.

Powell said it has not been determined whether this case may be related to one in December where $400 of gas was purchased with a stolen card.

Bellamy was given a $2,500 secured bond and a January 22 court date.
