Search warrant affidavits tie the discovery of an indoor marijuana growing operation last month to an investigation of embezzlement at Collier Harley-Davidson in Roanoke Rapids.
The embezzlement investigation involved Tracey Beard Brooks, the wife of Kenneth Brooks. Mr. Brooks faces several charges in the Roanoke Avenue marijuana growing operation, documents in the case show.
Mrs. Brooks, 45, was charged following an investigation that allegedly showed she admitted to the business’s owner and was seen on video taking currency on November 5, the search warrant filed by Detective F.D. Griffin of the Roanoke Rapids Police Department said.
Mrs. Brooks was in charge of the Harley-Davidson line of clothing at the store, the search warrant says, and was asked to do a shoe inventory on October 15. Her inventory showed that all shoes were accounted for.
A company audit, however, showed a loss of $2,000 from seven pairs of missing shoes, the search warrant says.
A search warrant was issued for the Brooks’ residence at 84 Jefferson Street as well as a building owned by Mr. Brooks at 300 Roanoke Avenue.
On November 19 another search warrant says a confidential and reliable source provided investigators with information about the building at 300 Roanoke Avenue. The building, according to the affidavit, says Mr. and Mrs. Brooks used the building for storage. Mr. Brooks also conducted business at this address, although the warrant doesn’t specify the nature of the business.
The source also told investigators large amounts of marijuana were at the building, which also had a large Harley-Davidson room with several motorcycles and merchandise. “The source stated that Kenneth Brooks and Tracey Brooks had on average 10 to 12 people at the business almost all the time.”
That tip set up execution of the search warrant at 300 Roanoke Avenue where the affidavit says stolen items were located at that location as well as the Brooks residence.
The search of the 300 Roanoke Avenue address also led to the discovery of a power bill with Mr. Brooks’ name on it for the building at 298 Roanoke Avenue, which is the old Harding and Grizzard building, according to the search warrant. Investigators found a contract for the sale of the building to Kenneth Brooks Investments. “Kenneth Brooks said he never bought the building but was renting. He had keys to the building in his possession.”
The search of the buildings yielded 10 pages worth of evidence and led to charges against Mr. Brooks of transporting non-tax paid alcohol; revoked registration; possession of marijuana up to half an ounce; possession of drug paraphernalia; possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana and maintaining a vehicle or dwelling for storing a controlled substance.
In the embezzlement case, investigators seized five pairs of Harley-Davidson shoes and a Harley-Davidson handbag.
Mr. and Mrs. Brooks both have January 9 court dates.
