Jimmie Lee Mason Jr. turned himself in Sunday in the company of a bondsman, the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said this morning.

Chief Deputy Wes Tripp declined comment on the circumstances surrounding his surrender, including whether family members encouraged him to do so.

The 20-year-old Roanoke Rapids man spent more than a year on the lam following the murders of Jenilee Ann Foster and her boyfriend, Thomas Tyrone “Tom Cat” Davis on September 4, 2011.

Tripp said it was unclear where Mason had been hiding out following the murders. Investigators plan to interview him to determine the circumstances of his life on the lam and where he spent that time eluding law enforcement.

Foster’s family has been notified of his surrender and the sheriff’s office continues to make attempts to notify Davis’s family.

While not commenting directly on the circumstances behind Mason’s surrender, Tripp noted in a press release, “The sheriff’s office wishes to thank America’s Most Wanted and the U.S. Marshal’s Service for their assistance in the case. Detectives and deputies with the sheriff’s office continuously worked leads to see that Mason was arrested.”

Mason was jailed without the opportunity for bond and was served warrants for two counts of murder.

He is scheduled to make his first court appearance Tuesday.
