Charges against Anthony Jermaine Gilchrist have been changed to attempted first-degree murder and also include a charge of assault on an unborn child.
He is also charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill in an attack that occurred at the Community Marathon store outside Roanoke Rapids.
Detective H.L. Williams of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said the victim in the case, the former girlfriend of Gilchrist, was in the early stages of pregnancy when the assault occurred inside the store.
The victim was cut and stabbed several times and another clerk who tried to intervene in the attack, which was reported around 6 p.m. Monday, was also injured.
Williams said the attack was most likely done with a knife but no weapon was recovered.
Gilchrist, 22, of Margaretsville, was extradited back to Halifax County from Emporia where officers with the town’s police department located his parked vehicle slightly more than an hour an a half after the assault occurred. “The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office would like extend gratitude to Officer Osborne, Detective Wright, Officer Turner, as well as other officers of the Emporia Police Department for the quick apprehension of the Mr. Gilchrist,” Williams said in a press release.
Gilchrist was jailed in Halifax County without the opportunity for bond and has a January 16 court date.
