The beach music industry this past weekend recognized two locals during the annual Carolina Beach Music Awards ceremonies in Myrtle Beach.

Steve Owens and Summertime were recognized as new artist of the year while Ray Melton was presented the industry appreciation award.

Additionally, Keith Houston, Jay Jenkins of Woodland and Jullian B. Fowler were recognized for their production work on the Stepping Out Tonight CD.

“It’s great when people recognize us for the hard work we put into it,” Owens said Tuesday. “Just to be nominated was an honor, especially in some of the categories, just to be in a class with them. Every thing went real well.”

Winning the award will definitely not hurt the band, Owens said. “It’s not a situation where we can charge double. We never started it to win awards. We started it to make good music and entertain the people.”

While nominated in eight different categories, the fact the band won only one is not a problem. “We’re very excited we won what we won,” Owens said.

The next step for the band is to keep on playing. “We’ve still got three or four songs to be released. I feel like we will get some chart activity.”

Melton

Melton was recognized for his contribution to the industry, Owens said. “He does a lot to promote different events. It was very well deserved.”

Melton said in email correspondence with rrspin.com, “I was truly blessed to receive the Carolina Beach Music Industry Appreciation Award. I would like to thank the good Lord for giving me such great parents, family, friends and fantastic fans who have encouraged me over the years.”

Melton also thanked the awards organizers and fellow disk jockeys. “I would like to thank the bands and artists for giving me such great music to play. If it wasn’t for you guys and ladies, I wouldn’t be able to receive this honor.”

Fellow disk jockey Mike Brooks announced the award, Melton said. “As he began to speak I knew something was up. It was with much excitement and emotions and tears of joy I accepted the award. I think of the many hours I have spent over the years playing and promoting Carolina beach music and it was great to realize that my efforts are appreciated.”
