A Roanoke Rapids man died this afternoon in an industrial mishap in Franklin, Virginia.

The Tidewater News of Franklin reported the victim, who has been identified as Jimmy Denny, got caught in a crane. He was mangled and bleeding badly when emergency workers arrived, the newspaper reported.

The mishap occurred around 12:55 p.m., Don Robertson, a spokesman for Isle of Wight County, told the Tidewater News.

His injuries occurred on the grounds of the former International Paper plant.

The newspaper quoted Robertson as saying, “Apparently the accident did involve a crane and it may have either trapped the person or fallen on the person.”

Denny was taken to Southampton Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Denny was working for Tak Investments, which is the parent company of ST Tissue, a company that leased from International Paper. The company leased a paper machine, office space, sheeting warehouse and recycled fiber facility to recycle waste paper into tissue for napkins and towels.

Robertson told the Tidewater News the matter will be investigated. “It’s early in the process but in anything like this OSHA gets involved.”
