The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office has charged a 21-year-old Enfield man with felony child abuse with serious physical injuries.
Detective Roy Rooks, who began investigating the case in August of 2011 when the report was initially received, said the child was about five-months-old at the time and sustained severe injuries that were considered non-accidental trauma.
Rooks declined to elaborate on the extent of the injuries the child received or how the child was injured.

He said the child is doing OK now and the father, Tony Orlando Whitaker Jr., was jailed on $30,000 bond and has an October 17 court date.
Rooks declined to discuss who reported the injuries but said in a press release that a lengthy investigation with assistance from physicians at the former Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville helped him obtain allegedly incriminating evidence against Whitaker.
