The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an attempted scam where someone repeatedly calls claiming that the victim owes money for a cash advance.
Major Bruce Temple said the person called was not taken by the scam, in which $486.93 was asked for. He said the call did not go long enough for the recipient to know whether the scammer wanted the money sent by wire.
The caller claims to be from the attorney general’s office in California. The incoming phone numbers are 347-338-6199 and 347-338-6188. The caller attempts to obtain information that would result in identity theft or online theft.
Thus far there has only be one such call reported.
Temple said the sheriff’s office recommends that citizens report such incidents and never give personal information over the phone. Be wary of calls from the 347 area code, he said.
The matter is still under investigation.
