Roanoke Rapids Firefighters saved four adult dogs from perishing after responding to a mobile home fire in Great Falls Circle Friday night.

Battalion Chief Jason Patrick said the dogs were handed over to neighbors because the occupants were not home at the time. They are now in the care of an animal hospital until the residents can get their home repaired.

Firefighters received the call shortly after 7:45 p.m. and upon responding saw light to moderate smoke and fire coming out of the vents of the stove hood.

The fire was around the cabinet area of the stove and most of the damage was contained to that area.

Firefighters had the fire knocked out within four to five minutes and stayed on the scene, which is located off West Tenth Street, for about an hour for salvage and cleanup, Patrick said.

Patrick said it appears the fire started around the stove and the cause is under investigation. “It was a good thing the neighbors happened to notice it. We were able to catch it early. The guys did a good job.”

Most of the damage was from the heavy smoke and can be repaired through cabinet and wall replacement. There was some vinyl damage outside and the stove will have to be replaced.

Seven Roanoke Rapids firefighters responded as well as four members of the Roanoke Valley Rescue Squad.
