The driver from Charlotte who died Thursday afternoon collided with a self-propelled fertilizer spreader, which could not stop, according to the state Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred shortly before 3:30 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 158 and Cornwallis Road, Sergeant M.P. Galleo said.
The spreader was coming off Cornwallis Road but could not stop, the sergeant said.
Henry Talley, 34, was driving on Highway 158 and tried to avoid colliding with the machinery but struck it and died on the scene.
Charges have been filed against the driver of tractor, Dennis Balmer Jr., 28, of Roanoke Rapids, for misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, according to Trooper W.C. Wheeler.
Any malfunctions with the tractor are still investigation.
Meanwhile, the Highway Patrol continues to investigate a crash Thursday night on Nelson Bridge Road outside of Enfield when it was reported a vehicle traveling east ran off the road to the right and came to rest in a creek.
WRAL reports Rocky Mount police identified the person removed from the car as Britinae Rachelle Whitehead, 21, who had been reported missing earlier in the week.
The TV station reported she was last seen leaving a friend’s house in Enfield Tuesday. The Highway Patrol received the report of the car in the creek around 9:15 Thursday night.
Galleo said the cause of the crash is still under investigation and while investigators can’t be sure, it is believed the crash may have occurred sometime Tuesday morning.
Who reported seeing the car in the creek is not known and Galleo said the vehicle was totally submerged.
