Vandals smashing car windows in Roanoke Rapids have done some $10,000 in damages.

Windows in 15 cars have been damaged since March 4, said Captain Andy Jackson of the city’s police department.

Vandalism has been reported in Cambridge Court, Fifth Street, Old Farm Road and Jefferson and Charlotte streets. A number of cars have been damaged from the 300 to 1100 blocks of Charlotte and Jefferson streets, Jackson said.

Jackson said he believes it is being done out of meanness and lack of respect for people’s property. Nothing has been taken from the cars.

It is believed the vandalism is occurring late at night and Jackson encourages anyone who sees suspicious activity late at night to call 911. “We would like to make contact with these people.”

If juveniles are caught doing this, it could mean trouble for them and their parents, Jackson said. “We have a juvenile protection order in place which means no one under 18 is supposed to be out after midnight.”

The first offense means a letter to parents. The second time means a $150 fine on up to $300 and $450 for subsequent offenses.
