Six juveniles, who after allegedly ransacking and vandalizing Medlin School, mistakenly locked themselves in a room, were apprehended Saturday afternoon.
Captain Andy Jackson of the Roanoke Rapids Police Department said damage to the inside of the building in the 200 block of Vance Street is estimated at $75,000.
Officer Daniel Hundley responded to a call shortly after 12:15 p.m. that juveniles were inside the school breaking windows. Jackson said the officer could hear them inside breaking things.
When he entered the building he discovered the six — ranging in age from 10 to 16 — had locked themselves in a room and couldn’t get out.
Hundley managed to get them out.
Before getting locked in the room the two girls and four boys allegedly knocked holes in the walls, broke out windows, sprayed fire extinguishers and poured chemicals on the floor. Golf clubs were found stuck in ceiling tiles.
The report gives no reason for the vandalism and does not list the name of the 16-year-old involved, Jackson said.
Juvenile petitions are being filed for breaking and entering, injury to real property and criminal damage to property.
The girl was given a $2,000 unsecured bond. The juveniles were released to their parents.
