Roanoke Rapids police are investigating a shooting that occurred shortly before 2:15 this morning at Phillips Service Center on 100 Roanoke Avenue.

A 61-year-old man who was staying at the station was shot and is in critical condition at an undisclosed hospital, Captain Andy Jackson said.

The shooting occurred when the man went outside to use the bathroom at the side of the building and heard and then felt a gunshot, Jackson said. The man, who was apparently there working, went back inside and called 911. He was transported to Halifax Regional Medical Center and then transported to another medical facility.

It is unclear whether the person who shot the man was someone getting ready to break in and was startled or whether there are other circumstances.

The victim was unable to give a description and police continue to investigate. One shot was fired. The initial report does not indicate where on his body the victim was shot.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call the police department at 252-533-2810 or Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.
