A Weldon woman who allegedly wrote down the card number of a drive through customer and used it to make a car payment has been arrested.

Detective Roy Rooks of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said himself and Sergeant Randy Keeton investigated a complaint Sunday where Latoria Yvette Artis copied the Visa card number while the customer she was serving waited for their food at a restaurant in Roanoke Rapids.

The 25-year-old allegedly used the card the next day to make a $2,200 down payment on a vehicle at Rheasville Truck and Auto.

Rooks, with cooperation from the car dealership, investigated the case and charged Artis with identity theft and attempted obtaining property by false pretense.

The money was transferred back to the customer’s account immediately, according to Rooks.

Artis was jailed on $20,000 bond and has a November 11 court date.
