One 17-year-old was arrested for assault and trespassing and several others arrested for trespassing following a fight at Northwest Halifax High School Friday afternoon.

Lieutenant George Evans of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office charged Antwan Cooper of Roanoke Rapids with assault and trespassing.

It is believed Cooper and the five or six others arrested for trespassing were students from KIPP Pride High in Gaston. Evans could not confirm the fight was about a football game where Northwest recently edged KIPP in double overtime.

It is believed the arrests caused KIPP to forfeit a game it was scheduled to play Friday night.

Evans said sometime between 3 and 3:30 p.m. a Crown Victoria with several people drove to Northwest and one of the people in the car claimed they were there to pick someone up.

Northwest school resource officer Daniel Jones became suspicious and called the sheriff’s office.

When Evans arrived a fight broke out and he reportedly saw Cooper shove a boy to the ground. No one was seriously injured.

Evans said the other people with Cooper were charged with trespassing.

Jones could not be reached for comment this morning and a spokesperson for Halifax County schools was not immediately available.
