The Halifax County Sheriff's Office is investigating an identity fraud case reported by a victim from New Jersey.

Major Bruce Temple said the offense occurred Sunday when the victim’s Visa card was used at several Halifax County stores along Interstate 95.

In one transaction the card was used to buy $142 in merchandise. The total usage is undetermined at this time.

The victim claims to have had the card in their possession. The detective division will continue to investigate the crimes.

Temple said it is possible a clone card was used. These are occasionally used in committing fraudulent activity.

There are few precautions a person can take to prevent cloning and surveillance equipment is commonly used to identify suspects in these types of crime.
